When searching out rocks for crafts, sometimes you are looking for something that is perfectly smooth and/or round. These make fabulous stones for rock painting.
Where to find rocks for crafts
I have shared many times where I like to buy affordable rocks in bulk. But, sometimes you just want nicer rocks to paint! And that’s OK!
We have found some of the best rocks you can order online. They come in different shapes and styles. I have to admit… I am kind of hooked.
Why do I buy rocks to paint?
It never fails when I say I “buy rocks” to paint people say “why?” Well, there are lots of reasons why you might need to buy rocks.
First, they aren’t just lying around in all parts of the country. In lots of areas, it is actually illegal for you to take them. And last, if you are paintings loads and loads of rocks they shouldn’t be taken in bulk from certain areas. You can mess up natures flow.

Different Kinds of Rocks to Buy
We set up an Amazon Shop just for our favorite stones to order! Check them all out here.
1. Santorini Rocks
Which rocks you buy will depend on what you plan to paint! There are so many different palettes, I mean rocks, to choose from. If you are looking for a super smooth surface you may want to check out these super smooth flat white stones.
You can also purchase perfectly rectangle or square Santorini rocks.
2. Big & round rocks for crafts
Want something more round and rock like? These big and round rocks are big and perfect for making large designs on!
3. Mini stones
For some of my projects, I like to use mini stones. Depending on what I’m working on I have used these darker mini stones for fun things like travel tic-tac-toe. These stones are small, most are under 1″ wide!
These mini white stones are great for travel games too like memory! Both of these sets of mini stones came in a larger quantity and there were a few stones that weren’t quite as nice as the rest. But, overall I was happy with what I got and they are perfect for little craft projects.
4. Perfectly round stones
These little circle rocks are just like mini canvases. They are great for a special project where you want all of your rocks the same size and shape.
5. Extra smooth rocks
You can also buy “regular rocks“. These will come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they will all be nice and smooth. And they are a flatter shape so there is plenty of surface space to create on.
One of my favorite things about ordering rocks is they arrive right to your doorstep! With a little prep, you are ready to paint your next masterpiece!
